Axar Patel to Lead Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025: A New Era Begins
Axar’s Journey and Leadership Experience
At 31, Axar has gained valuable leadership experience, having captained Gujarat in 23 domestic matches, including the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. While his captaincy record in the IPL is limited—having led DC in one match last season—his role as India’s T20I vice-captain earlier this year highlights his growing stature.
With Rishabh Pant’s exit from DC before the mega auction, Axar emerged as the franchise’s most experienced player. Across six seasons, he has played 82 matches for DC, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. In IPL 2024, he amassed 235 runs at an average of nearly 30 and took 11 wickets with an economy rate of 7.65.
Axar’s Vision as DC Captain

DC Management’s Backing
DC chairman Kiran Kumar Grandhi praised Axar’s journey, emphasizing that his elevation to captaincy was a natural progression. "Axar has been an integral part of our team since 2019. He has always stepped up when needed, and we are confident he will excel in this role."
Co-owner Parth Jindal echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Axar’s growth into a mature all-rounder. "Axar’s leadership qualities and cricketing acumen make him the right choice. With seasoned players like KL Rahul, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc supporting him, we believe this is the beginning of something special for DC."
DC’s Quest for Their Maiden Title
DC remains one of the three original IPL teams yet to lift the trophy, alongside Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. After finishing sixth last season, the franchise is determined to turn things around under Axar’s leadership.
With a revamped coaching staff—Hemang Badani as head coach, Venugopal Rao as director of cricket, and Matthew Mott as assistant coach—DC aims to build a strong title-contending squad. Their IPL 2025 campaign begins on March 24 in Visakhapatnam against Lucknow Super Giants.
With Axar’s appointment, all five franchises that required a new captain post-auction have made their choices: Rajat Patidar (RCB), Ajinkya Rahane (KKR), Rishabh Pant (LSG), and Shreyas Iyer (PBKS).
